How the materials compare.
The most common question we hear is simply "what's the difference?" Here's a side-by-side on the things that actually matter, cost, heat, scratch resistance, repairability, shaping and outdoor use.

Notes. Natural stone varies by type, granite and quartzite are hard and heat-tough,
while marble is softer and can etch. Porcelain / ceramic and ultra-compact are closely
related sintered surfaces; ultra-compact is typically the densest and toughest. Acrylic and solid surface are the
same material (acrylic plus mineral fillers), its stand-outs are seamless joins, repairability and being
thermoformable into curves.
Shaping. Engineered stone, porcelain and ceramic can have curves cut through the slab thickness, but built-up
(thicker) edges cannot be curved. Natural stone is the exception, curved built-up edges can be created by cutting strips,
gluing them and polishing out the joins, because the colour runs right through the stone. It is time-consuming, so you see
it in bars and restaurants more than in homes. Acrylic solid surface can be thermoformed into free curves. Whatever the
surface, a trivet or board is still wise for very hot pans.
