Porcelain and ceramic are fired clay-based sheets; ultra-compact (sintered) surfaces are made from a broader mineral mix pressed and fired to an even denser, tougher slab, often in thicker formats. The differences are subtle, and both handle sun, rain and heat beautifully, which is why they're favourites for outdoor kitchens as well as busy indoor benchtops.

What's the difference between porcelain, ceramic and ultra-compact?
They're closely related. Porcelain is a dense, high-fired ceramic. Ultra-compact (sintered) surfaces use a broader mineral mix pressed and fired to an even harder, tougher slab, often thicker and in larger formats. The difference is real but subtle, both resist heat, scratches and UV.
Can these surfaces be used outdoors?
Yes, they're among the best outdoor options. They won't fade in the sun or stain from weather, which is why they're popular for outdoor kitchens and BBQ areas.
Can porcelain chip?
The surface is extremely hard, but edges and corners can chip if knocked hard. Careful fabrication and good edge detailing reduce the risk.
